Elementor (or my theme) can host Google Fonts locally. Do I still need OMGF?

Most likely, yes. Elementor’s Load Google Fonts Locally option (Elementor › Settings › Performance, default: disabled) only hosts the Google Fonts that Elementor adds itself, i.e. the fonts you’ve selected in Elementor. Other Google Fonts on your site are still loaded from Google’s servers.

What does Elementor not cover?

  • Google Fonts loaded by your theme.
  • Google Fonts loaded by other plugins.
  • Google Fonts loaded in other ways, e.g. using @import  or @font-face  statements in stylesheets, or by JavaScript (e.g. Web Font Loader).
  • Google Fonts loaded by embedded content (iframes), e.g. maps or videos.

Also, when Elementor can’t download a font, it loads that font from Google’s servers instead.

The same goes for themes and other plugins with a similar option: they only host the fonts they add themselves.

What does OMGF do?

OMGF processes the Google Fonts on your entire site, no matter which theme or plugin added them. OMGF Pro also processes Google Fonts loaded in other ways, e.g. in stylesheets, inline styles or by JavaScript. See Is my theme compatible with OMGF (Pro)?

OMGF also shows a notice when it finds embedded content (iframes) known for loading Google Fonts.

How can I check if Google Fonts are still loaded from Google’s servers?

  • Open a page in the frontend while you’re logged in as an administrator, and look at the stoplight next to OMGF in the admin bar. An orange or red stoplight means Google Fonts are still loaded from Google’s servers. See Admin Bar Menu.
  • OMGF’s Dashboard shows the results of its Google Fonts Checker, with suggestions on how to resolve them.
  • In your browser’s Developer Tools (F12), open the Network tab, reload the page and filter on fonts.g . Any requests to fonts.googleapis.com  or fonts.gstatic.com  mean Google Fonts are still loaded from Google’s servers.
